A 10-Minute Bible Reading Plan for Beginners

A 10-minute Bible reading plan for beginners, Steady Faith Co

If you have ever opened a Bible in Genesis with big plans and closed it somewhere in Leviticus, you are in good company. Starting is not the hard part. Knowing where to begin, and what to do for ten minutes, is.

Here is a simple plan you can start today. You do not need special tools, a study Bible or an hour of free time.

Where to start reading

Many beginners find the Gospel of Mark a friendly first stop. It is the shortest of the four Gospels, moves quickly and keeps its focus on Jesus. After that, you can read through the Psalms for prayer and honesty, then a letter such as Romans, James or Colossians for teaching about daily life.

A ten-minute rhythm

  • Cue (1 minute): Sit down, take a breath and ask God to meet you in the reading. A one-line prayer is enough.
  • Read (5 minutes): Read a short section slowly, out loud if that helps. If you are in Mark, a paragraph or two is plenty.
  • Notice (2 minutes): Look for one word, phrase or idea that stands out. Write it down.
  • Respond (2 minutes): Pray about what you noticed, or choose one small thing to do with it today.

"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." James 1:22 (KJV)

The goal is not to finish quickly. It is to meet with God regularly and let what you read shape the day.

A one-week sample in Mark

Try one of these short sections each day for a week:

  1. Mark 1:1-13
  2. Mark 1:14-28
  3. Mark 1:29-45
  4. Mark 2:1-12
  5. Mark 2:13-28
  6. Mark 3:1-12
  7. Mark 3:13-35

Each day, use the same four steps. At the end of the week, look back at what you wrote. You may be surprised at how much you noticed.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

If you miss a day

You will. When it happens, do not try to double up. Pick up at the next section. Consistency over months matters more than a perfect streak this week.

If you want a ready-made plan

The 10-Minute Word Habit is a 30-day Bible reading journal built on this same rhythm. It walks through Mark, selected Psalms, Romans, James and Colossians, with a Minimum Day for low-energy days and a Grace-and-Restart plan for missed days. It comes as printable and tablet-fillable PDFs.
